Can God forgive my past sins?

grief.jpg (12759 bytes)If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

1 John chapter 1 verse 7 reminds us, “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  All sin.  Those are powerful words.  Those are true words.  The Bible is the inerrant Word of God.  It is verbally inspired in the whole and in the parts.  It is the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice, so when John writes that Jesus will forgive us of all sin, that declaration includes even the most heinous of acts.

Now you may wonder what you must do to receive such all encompassing forgiveness.   Every other religion known to man detail some work that men must do or some ritual that men must perform in order to right themselves with God.  Christianity alone contrasts this model with the work that God has already done on man’s behalf, through the person and work of Jesus Christ, to bring sinful mankind back into fellowship with Him.  So yes, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and if you believe that God raised Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved.  And God will forgive you for all of your past sins.

What does the Bible say about Forgiveness?

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin (Psalm 51:1-2).

Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:9-10).

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One (1 John 1:9-2:1).
