Sometimes we can easily grasp the concept that God forgives sins in general, and yet still struggle to believe that He will forgive particular sins.  We know God will forgive the liar or the thief, but we question whether He will forgive the drug dealer.  Deep down inside, do we believe that God will forgive the murderer?  More personally and specifically, will God forgive me, even for my past abortion?  These can be difficult and complex questions, but fortunately the Bible has a simple and straightforward answer for them.

Let’s take a look. 1 John chapter 1, verses 8 – 9 explain “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  So again, God is telling us in the plainest language possible that He will forgive us for any sin that we have committed, so long as we confess our sin to Him.   And God even goes one step further.  Not only will He forgive us, but He cleanses us from all our unrighteousness.  That is true forgiveness, from all of the pain, and all of the guilt, of our past.

What does the Bible say about Forgiveness?

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin (Psalm 51:1-2).

Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:9-10).

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One (1 John 1:9-2:1).
