On July 17, 1967, an earthquake rocked
my world. Felt by relatively few people, it immediately
devastated those of us at its epicenter and instantly
brought chaos to our lives. Although not a dynamic force of
nature, the event shook my universe with intense magnitude,
crumbled my seemingly stable foundation, and sent rippling
shockwaves far into the future. It was suicide.
There for Survivors
Suicide is a subject shrouded in
mystery and myth. For centuries, the word has been whispered
behind cupped hands, punctuated with knowing glances and
interjections like "crazy." Yet, statistics regarding
suicide completions and the families left in the wake of
this growing tragedy speak the need for enlightenment on the
subject. Perhaps the time has come to confront a subject too
long considered taboo.
Whatever form our trials may
take—whether sickness, financial problems, animosity,
rejection, bitterness, or anger—we tend to consider them
“setbacks” in our life. God, however, has a different
perspective. He views adversity as a way, not to hinder the
saints, but to advance their spiritual growth.
